Making real friends

hiya, firstly i’m new to this website, so sorry if this topic has been covered before.

i have been out of “the truth” for almost one year.

i live with my non-witness mother, have an amazing boyfriend, work and am in college.

Welcome to the forum. It will take a lot of work on your part. This is a problem we all have since we left the cult and the reason is in the cult we was told everyone there was our friends. It took very little work on our part to make friends. In real life it take great effort to make good friends. I will stop here for there are better qualified ones on this site that can relate to you better and can give you good advice.

Deceptive comments or lies that you have heard from platform or brothers & sisters?

ok, so what are the most deceptive comments that you have heard from your experience in congregations?.

my top three are;.

1) service overseer during the ’ how did we do?’ annual talk, twisted the figures to such an extent that it looked like the congregations ministry was in tip-top shape.

I laugh at it now but in the day I thought it was true. Reading the Wt. and Awake was like having a college education. Going to college is evil because all all that goes on is sex, drugs and rock-n-roll this is no place for a Christian. Circuit overseer telling me there is no child abuse taking place in the organization. Still ADD

Welcome. I feel it's hard to be a JW's no matter what sexual preference you are. They have rules on top of rules when it comes to sex. Like all good cult's they love controlling you in any way they can. Just get out of the cult as soon as you can and don't be guilty for who you are. Take care. Still Totally ADD

Bought My First Christmas Tree Last Night

last year i didn't bother with christmas as it still felt like a "nothing" day to me (thanks watchtower!).

this is the 2nd christmas since waking up and leaving the cult and i've finally bought my first christmas tree:).

i have no idea what to do with it though.

Just enjoy the moment P.E. The first time my wife and I had a tree it was easy for me because my wife was a convert and she knew what to do. Thing was we both were having anxiety attacks over our first celebration of Christmas. Just go with the flow and have a great time doing it. Merry Christmas to you and your daughter. Happy Thanksgiving 2017

once upon a time, as a jw, i was afraid to buy turkey during thanksgiving time.

while attending the thursday night ministry school meeting (on thanksgiving day), i was cautious not to mention the word thanksgiving, for fear of bringing reproach to bigj.. now, free at last, my happy thanksgiving wishes to everyone who celebrate this holiday..

Happy Thanksgiving to you EverApostate. May your pants be able to stretch and your belt have a fast release buckle. We will be enjoying company with several good friends about 15 in all tomorrow. 1975... the year that keeps on giving.

so i recently moved back to my really really really small hometown in the south.

it was the place that my parents moved to from a major city up north in the early 1970's.

when we lived here times were very tough financially and i was always told that the reason we did not attend meetings was due to the fact that we had no car / no gas for the car / could not afford repairs for the years we were there.

Silent I know you are experiencing a little shock right now. Take it from a person who went through something similar. A few years after my Dad dies I found out I may have a half brother living somewhere. He had a affair with one one his employees back in the 60's. I also found out that is why we moved from central IL to FL in 1970.

My father was what you would call a super elder. He loved talking about the evils of fornication and adultery. Everyone in the local congregations thought he was great guy. So when deep family secrets come out it is usually the children who learn of it last.

I learned our parents are just human, just like us no matter what the cult trys to convince us of otherwise. All parents have secrets they don't want their kids to find out. You just came across some accidentally. Reflect on what you have learned and remember they was bamboozled by a cult and angry about it. I hope this helps you. Take care. Still Totally ADD

Convention “Highlights” - bwhahaha!

taking a walk down memory lane at those looooonnnnngg, tedious conventions... .

(boy, they weren’t kidding when they spoke about being long-suffering and having endurance!).

but what were some of your convention highlights, or lowlights, from back in the day?.

This is the high lights of the only convention I remember. Atlanta Georgia, 1969. First talk of the convention the speaker said " we are not white, black, yellow or red people we are polka dot people" followed by a loud applause. I was 15 at the time and this made me feel special. The world was in turmoil on civil rights but all JW's was equal we didn't have that problem. I was very naive. To this day I wish the whole world felt that way. I guess I am still naive when it comes to prejudices humans have.

The other thing I remember was Atlanta Georgia in mid July. Close to 100 degrees with high humidity. Severe thunderstorms every afternoon. The rest of the day was a steam bath. Convention ran out of food, ice and drinks during the noon break. Leaving many dehydrated. We went home with what I will call sun poisoning. I took a week to get back to normal.

Boy was that fun. Root canal would have been more enjoyable. Still Totally ADD

from facebook:just saw my jw mother after not seeing her for more than 2 years.

when i do see her, it is brief, she never asks about my life, doesn't ask about my 4 children her grandchildren, doesn't ask about my grandchildren...her great grandchildren, she doesn't ask about my other 2 brothers that she is also alienated from, she doesn't ask about my brothers family.

she doesn't talk about the jw/org either.

So on my calendar I should mark January 7, 2018 @ 3:38 pm GMT. Is this correct? By the way what is GMT time? I don't want to be late for the party. This is very different from 1975 prediction because we did not have the exact date and time. Lol

I wonder if this kind of paranoia is going to be a common occurrence from this point on in this cult? I remember crazy talk about Armageddon from old friends many times when I was in. My Dad love talking about how God was going to kill everyone in great detail. Today those who have been indoctrinated for so many years appear to be suffering with a mental illness. Remember how many of us suffered with mental anxiety after leaving. This may be a problem the WT may have to deal with for a long time to come. Their own self made paranoia. Still Totally ADD

People Asking Me To Help Them Leave

i dont know if it's due to the last convention, the recent broadcasts, the internet or just plain fatigue - but since the convention i've had a few people contact me via facebook messenger asking how i am then cutting to the chase asking me what it's like "on the outside" or "how did you adjust after leaving?

" and asking me how they can leave the wt but keep their families.. my reply is always the same, i show real genuine interest and concern and listen to their situation.

then i suggest a fade, how to fade, to ignore or reject elders visits, to not talk about their doubts to active jws under any circumstances and finally point them to this site.

P.E. I find it so interesting and sad on how trap your friends are. The mental anguish they are all going through just because they don't believe the W.T.. Your experience of your friends feels like a flash back to the pass. What a terrible religion we all came from that makes us paranoid to the point we have to sneak around so we can use our own free will to live our life's as we want.

To me it looks like your friend's trust you enough to get the answers they need. I hope it turns out well for all of them. Like us they have a hard journey ahead of them. Keep up the good work you are doing. Take care. Still Totally ADD
